The term "advanced shipping notice" (ASN) pertains specifically to logistics and supply chain management as a notification system designed to inform recipients about the details of a shipment before it arrives. This notice typically includes crucial information such as what items are being shipped, the quantities, and the expected arrival time. It allows the receiving party to prepare for the incoming goods, ensuring efficient handling upon delivery.

This advance notice is particularly valuable in managing warehouse operations and inventory levels, as it facilitates better planning and coordination when the shipment arrives. By receiving this information ahead of time, organizations can also reduce delays and improve the accuracy of inventory management.

In contrast, the other options do not accurately capture the essence of what an advanced shipping notice encompasses. Notifications about out-of-stock items relate to inventory control rather than shipment timelines, while confirmations of payment pertain more to financial transactions than to logistics. Summaries of backordered items focus on fulfillment processes rather than the details of incoming shipments. Thus, the definition provided aligns precisely with the concept of an advanced shipping notice in logistics.
